Biography

Sebastián Ducete (1568-1620) was born in Toro (Zamora). He was the son of Leonor Morán and Pedro Ducete, who worked as a painter. Although he learned the trade with his father, it is possible that he had also trained with Juan de Montejo (Vasallo, 2004). This hypothesis comes from the stylistic characteristics that can be seen in Ducete's work, which is influenced by Juni and Mannerist prints. He later joined the workshop of Juan Sáez de Torrecilla and, after the death of his father in 1593, Ducete inherited the family workshop (Vasallo, 2004). Later, in 1598, Esteban de Rueda joined the workshop as an apprentice. Together they carried out many commissions, such as the Cristo de la Agonía in the Carmelitas Descalzas de Toro (Zamora). Numerous works by Sebastián Ducete are scattered in museums and institutions. See, in this regard: Custodio ( Museo de Sancti Spiritus de Toro, Zamora), Dolorosa (Pinilla de Toro, Zamora), Las tentaciones de San Antonio ( Retablo Mayor del Monasterio de Santa Sofía en Toro, Zamora) or La Sagrada Familia ( Museo Enrique Larreta, Buenos Aires).
