Biography

There is very little information available regarding the life of Francisco Gallego, with some even questioning his very existence due to the similarity of his name with Fernando Gallego (Post, 1933). However, preserved documents confirm that he created the altarpiece of St. Catherine for Salamanca Cathedral and contributed to the crafting of the iron grilles for the Royal Hospital of Santiago de Compostela (Gallego de Miguel, 1962). Numerous works have been attributed to Francisco Gallego, which are now held in both national and international museums and institutions. Notable examples include Acacius and the Ten Thousand Martyrs of Mount Ararat (Meadows Museum, Dallas) and the paintings from the Altarpiece of St. Catherine (Salamanca Cathedral).
