Biography

Hernando de Solís was a silversmith active in Valladolid in the early 17th century. In 1611 he replaced Alonso Rodríguez as a marker of carved silver (Barrón, 2017). His appointment was made by Juan Bautista Beintin and is recorded in Minute Book No. 36 of 1611: "Appointment of marker to Hernando de Solis: Este dia se nonbro por marcador desta ciudad para la marca de la plata labrada en lugar de Alonso Rodrigues platero difunto que lo hera a Hernando de Solis por el tienpo que fuere la voluntad desta ciudad sin salario alguno" (Archivo Municipal de Valladolid, f. 60r). The mark of this silversmith, "SOLIS", appears on some pieces dated to the first third of the 17th century (Barrón, 2017). In this regard we can cite a chalice from Cuéllar made by Martín de Aranda or a chalice from Villabuena (Álava).
