Biography

Joos van Cleve (c. 1485-1540) was a Flemish painter, likely born in the region of Cleves (Germany). His style merges the Flemish tradition, particularly influenced by Jan van Eyck, with elements of the Italian Renaissance, which he came to know through exposure to various works. Van Cleve worked for several European courts, earning him fame and enabling him to paint portraits of noble figures. Numerous works attributed to Joos van Cleve are held in museums and institutions. For example,The Rest on the Flight into Egypt (Royal Museums of Fine Arts of Belgium) and The Holy Family (Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York).
