Maestro de las Figuras Anchas
Biography

Post (1933) was the first to identify this painter’s work and dubbed him the “Master of the Broad Figures” due to the voluminous nature of his characters. Documents preserved at the Monastery of Oña (Burgos) revealed that a painter named Juan Sánchez had been involved in the creation of the panels for the main altarpiece (Silva, 1973; Silva, 1990). His father, Juan Sánchez the Elder, was a painter active in Burgos during the first third of the 15th century, and the two collaborated on several projects. Juan Sánchez the Younger’s style blends elements of International Gothic with Hispano-Flemish art; furthermore, he was familiar with the new models of Northern art, likely through engravings and woodcuts (Silva Maroto, 2011). Juan Sánchez’s paintings are widely dispersed among museums and institutions. See, for example, the following: Crucifixion (Prado Museum, Madrid); Miracle of Saint Íñigo (Burgos Museum); Resurrection of Lazarus (Church of San Salvador, Oña); and the Flight into Egypt (Bob Jones University, Greenville).
