Giusto da Guanto; Justus van Ghent; Joos van Wassenhove
Biography
Justo de Gante was a Flemish painter, likely born around 1430-1435 in Ghent (Belgium), and deceased circa 1480. He was active primarily during the second half of the 15th century and is recognised for his role in the transition from International Gothic to Early Renaissance. He worked both in Flanders and Italy, with his works closely associated with the circle of Federico da Montefeltro, Duke of Urbino, at whose court he produced much of his most renowned work. His painting is characterised by a detailed use of colour and light, as well as by blending Flemish and Italian influences (Juřen, 1997; Scully & Seidel, 2016). Numerous works of art by Justo de Gante are held in national and international museums and institutions. Notable examples include Adoration of the Magi (Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York) and Music (The National Gallery, London).
