Biography

Adriaen Thomasz Key (ca. 1544–ca. 1589) was a Flemish painter who excelled in portraiture and religious scenes. He trained with Willem Key in his workshop and later worked as an assistant (Jonckheere, 2007). After his master’s death, Adriaen Thomasz took over the workshop and in 1568 registered as a master with the Guild of St. Luke (Antwerp). In recent years, numerous works have been attributed to him, notably the two side panels of a triptych depicting Saint Jerome and Saint Clare accompanied by the donors (Díaz, 2010), currently in a private collection in Madrid. Numerous paintings and engravings attributed to Adriaen Thomasz Key are scattered among museums and institutions. See, for example, the following: *Family Portrait* (Prado National Museum, Madrid), *Portrait of a Gentleman* (Louvre Museum, Paris), and the triptych of Antonio del Río and Leonor López de Villanueva (Louvre Museum, Paris).
