Pietro, Lando di

Active in Siena, Florence and Naples

Biography

Lando di Pietro (ca.1280-1340) was born in Siena. Although he worked as an architect and sculptor, he is known for his work as a goldsmith (Cioni, 1998). Henry VII - Count of Luxembourg and Holy Roman Emperor - commissioned him in 1311 to make a crown to be used on the day of his coronation. This commission made his fame grow. According to existing documentation, Lando di Pietro worked on the bells of the municipal tower of Siena in the 1320s. In addition to working in Siena, he also participated in the construction of the bell of the town hall of Florence. In the late 1330s he moved to Naples to work at court (Moretti, 2004).
