Biography

Initially Post (1953) gave this artist the name of Maestro de Geria due to a panel found in that town in Valladolid. Later, Gudiol (1959) described him as a disciple of the master of Avila; he also considered that he could be related to Francisco Gallego. In 1962 the Marquis of Lozoya referred to him as Maestro de las Clavellinas, "since in many of his works these humble flowers of the Castilian orchards appear". However, it was Rodríguez Cruz (1964) who called him Master of the Carnations because of the particular treatment of these flowers in some of his panels. Although there is no documentation on this artist, his works have been found in Avila, Valladolid and Segovia, the latter being the city where they are most abundant. His work is distinguished by the accentuation of caricatured features, the marked dramatic tension, the expressive hardness of the figures and the use of a primitive perspective (Rodríguez Cruz, 1964). There are numerous works by the Maestro de los Claveles scattered in museums and institutions. See, in this regard: Lamentation over the Body of Christ (Provincial Museum of Fine Arts of Segovia), Altarpiece of San Andrés ( Toledo Museum of Art, Ohio) or Presentation in the Temple (private collection, Belgium).
