Biography

It was Post (1947) who dubbed this artist the “Master of Osma” because of the paintings he created in the cathedral of Burgo de Osma (Soria). He believed that the artist came from the Guadalajara or Toledo area and had been a pupil of the Master of the Lunas. He also dated the artist’s active period to the late 15th and early 16th centuries. The paintings (Díaz Padrón, 1979; García Hernández, 2000) by the Master of Osma are scattered among various museums and institutions. See, for example, the following: Assumption of the Virgin at the National Archaeological Museum, Madrid; Saint Anthony of Padua and Saint Bernardino of Siena at the Lázaro Galdiano Museum, Madrid (Padrón, 1987); Altarpiece of Saint Michael ( Martín González, 1973) at the Diocesan Museum, Valladolid; and Virgin and Child at Johns Hopkins University, Baltimore.
