Active in Zamora in the late 15th and early 16th centuries
Biography
Among the followers of the Master of Palanquinos, the Master of Valdescorriel stands out; his name derives from the altarpiece in the parish church of that town in Zamora (Cuesta, 2010). He was a painter active in the province of Zamora in the late 15th and early 16th centuries. For decades, his artistic persona remained overshadowed by that of the master from León, to whom Post (1933; 1938) attributed several of his works, such as the panel depicting King Hezekiah, now in the Carnegie Museum of Art (Pittsburgh, United States). Subsequently, his collaboration with another follower of Palanquinos—the so-called Master of Villafáfila—has been documented in the altarpiece of the Church of El Salvador in Valdescorriel, Zamora (Ballesté, 2017; Ballesté, 2019). In addition to the aforementioned altarpiece, the Master of Valdescorriel is credited with the mural depicting the Baptism of Jesus in the Church of San Juan del Mercado in Benavente (Cuesta, 2010).
