Description

Stefan Auspitz was born in Vienna in 1869. He joined the family bank (Auspitz, Lieben & Co.) and rose to the position of director in 1906. Auspitz was an avid art collector, amassing a vast collection which he opened to the public in the 1920s. However, the financial crisis of 1931 led to the sale of the collection for $475,000 to Kurt Walter Bachstitz, an art dealer. In 1942, Auspitz was deported to the Theresienstadt concentration camp, and he passed away shortly after his liberation in 1945 (Lillie, 2003).
