Thomas Agnew (1794–1871) and Vittore Zanetti went into business together in 1817, founding the firmThomas Agnew & Sons that same year. Although they originally focused on publishing printed works, over time they came to specialize in modern paintings. In 1860, they opened a branch in London. After Thomas retired, his relatives—William Agnew, George Agnew, and Lockett Agnew—took over the business. Finally, in 2008, the firm closed its doors for good.
