Santa Clara Convent, Medina de Pomar

Medina de Pomar (Burgos, Spain)

Description

The Convent of Santa Clara (Medina de Pomar, Burgos) was founded in January 1313 by Sancho Sánchez de Velasco and Sancha García, who were in the service of the monarchs. Their aim was to build a magnificent burial site where members of their family could be laid to rest. The complex has undergone modifications over time; for example, in 1616 the original apse was replaced with a new one. The convent housed numerous works of art, some of which were dispersed in the late 19th century, such as The Adoration of the Magi by Justo de Gante (The Metropolitan Museum, New York) and Mary, Queen of Heaven by the Master of the Legend of Saint Lucy (The National Gallery of Art, Washington).
