The origin of the Rijksmuseum lies in the National Gallery of Art. The government decided in 1798 to establish a museum following the French model, so the gallery opened its doors in 1800. A few years later, in 1808, the Kingdom of Holland was in the hands of Louis Napoleon Bonaparte, who moved the museum's collection to Amsterdam. In 1876 the museum had become too small, so work began on a new building. Although its inauguration took place in 1885, in 1904-1916 new galleries were added and in 1950 a new department of Asian art was created. Among the many pieces housed in the museum from Castilla y León is afragment of a textile from Villalcázar de Sirga (Palencia).
