Description

Numancia was a Celtiberian city located near the present-day town of Garray (Soria). The city’s history is defined by the conflicts between the Celtiberians and Rome, particularly during the Bellum Numantinum (154-133 BCE). The city withstood numerous Roman sieges over decades, with the final siege, led by the Roman general Publius Cornelius Scipio Aemilianus in 133 BCE, being especially notable. This operation, characterised by significant technical and logistical complexity, culminated after several months of isolation, starvation, and resistance. Today, the archaeological site of Numancia preserves the remains of this ancient city, including the layouts of its walls and dwellings.
