Description

Fuentes de Duero is currently an uninhabited village dependent on La Cistérniga, a town near Valladolid. It is located on the banks of the Duero River, on its right bank. It belonged to the bishopric of Palencia (1126-1214). It was part of the merindad of the Infantazgo de Valladolid. -In 1829, the property of practically the entire municipality of Fuentes de Duero was acquired by the Count of Cortina, to whom we owe important changes in the buildings that were in that demarcation.

The Romanesque remains of the church of Santiago, from the second half of the 12th century, are under a plaster and cement rendering; only some parts are visible on the outside, such as the doorway on the southern wall. Inside, there have also been important transformations that have masked the primitive Romanesque construction; even so, there are some interesting testimonies such as its paired columns and capitals (Digital Project Encyclopedia of the Romanesque. Santa María La Real Foundation).
