Jonathan Ruffer (b. 1951) was born in London. He studied history at Sidney Sussex College, Cambridge University and obtained a law degree. He founded Ruffer Investment Management, a firm specialising in investment strategy. In addition to his role in finance, Ruffer is a keen philanthropist. In 2012 he bought a number of Zurbarán paintings that were at risk of being sold overseas, ensuring that they remained in their historic location in Auckland Castle. He has since focused his efforts on revitalising the town of Bishop Auckland in Durham. This has led him to found the Auckland Project, an initiative that aims to promote tourism in the region, restore Auckland Castle and develop cultural venues.
