Description

The origins of the Church of Santiago date back to the first half of the 12th century, as can be seen in the remains of the primitive Romanesque chevet. Although it currently has a single nave with chapels between buttresses, it originally had three naves and a transept. In 1811 the church suffered a serious fire and was restored between 1989-1992 (Hernando Garrido, 2002). Within the complex, the façade stands out above all: it has an archivolt decorated with figures in a radial arrangement that rests on historiated capitals with zigzagged shafts. It depicts scenes of condemned trades and vices, linked to the social and economic context of Carrión de los Condes in the 12th century. The capitals, of difficult interpretation, introduce symbols of divine judgment and salvation.
