Description

The church of San Pelayo Mártir was founded as a monastery in 1132 thanks to the donation of the Muñoz de Saldaña family. It has a basilica floor plan with three naves and a triple apse with semicircular apses, the central one more advanced and elevated. The north portal is crowned by a belfry from the 16th century. The Romanesque walls of the chancel and the chapter house, built in limestone ashlar, stand out. The exterior of the central apse shows Mudejar decoration with blind arches and brick friezes. The chapter house, with a rectangular floor plan, has simple ribbed vaults on circular pillars (Rodríguez Montañés, 2002).
