Monastery of San Benito el Real

Valladolid (Spain)

Description

The Monastery of San Benito el Real (Valladolid) dates back to 1390, when Juan I donated the fortress to the Order of Saint Benedict. The monastery soon gained great renown and exerted a strong influence on the surrounding monasteries (Rodríguez, 1981). Around the year 1500, under the leadership of Friar Pedro de Nájera, part of the church was constructed, following the plans of Juan de Arandia and García de Olave; later, Gil de Hontañón drew up the plans for the portico (Rivera and Valdeón, 1990). Following Mendizábal’s confiscation, the complex was converted into a barracks, resulting in the loss of certain items, such as a saint from the altarpiece that is currently housed at the Victoria & Albert Museum (London).
