Sir Henry Wellcome's intense interest in collecting led him to gather a large number of artifacts and works of art related to the history of medicine. His main purpose was to build up a collection that would be useful to students and researchers. In 1936, shortly before his death, Wellcome established the Wellcome Trust, a charitable foundation whose mission was to promote global health through scientific research. He also bequeathed to the Trust his entire collection, which is now housed and exhibited in the Wellcome Collection.
