The Memorial Art Gallery of the University of Rochester (New York) was founded in 1913 by Emily Sibley Watson (1855-1945), who sought to commemorate the memory of her son, James Averell. In 1926 a new wing was added to the museum, as it had become too small. Later, in 1968, another extension was designed by Waasdorp, Northrup and Kaelber. Finally, in 1986 a third extension was completed.
