Description

Charles I of England (1600-1649) was born in Dunfermline, Scotland. He was the son of James VI of Scotland and Anne of Denmark (Cust, 2005). After the death of his brother Henry Frederick, Charles became heir to the throne and was named Prince of Wales in 1616. He acceded to the throne in 1625 and married Henrietta Marie of France. However, in 1649 he was tried for treason and beheaded the same year. This led to the temporary abolition of the monarchy (Carlton, 1995).
