Description

Buckingham House was built between 1702 and 1705 by John Sheffield, Duke of Buckingham and Normanby, probably to designs by William Talman. In 1762 George III bought it from Sir Charles Sheffield as a residence for Queen Charlotte for £28,000. Although originally conceived as a private retreat rather than a palace, it soon became the monarchs main residence. George III refurbished the building by removing the Baroque ornaments and added new wings for the library and the Prince of Wales's quarters. After the death of the queen and the king's retirement to Windsor, Buckingham House was abandoned until George IV decided to transform it into a unified palace for domestic and ceremonial functions, being the origin of the current Buckingham Palace.
