Raymond Pitcairn (1885-1966) was the son of Gertrude Starkey and John Pitcairn, who had initially worked in the railway industry; however, in 1883 he made the leap to the chemical sector and founded PPG Industries, specializing in the production of paints. Raymond had studied law, but decided to abandon his profession and devote himself entirely to supervising the construction of Bryn Athyn Cathedral. Throughout his life Raymond acquired numerous works of art that are now scattered in different museums and institutions, such as the Metropolitan Museum in New York (Hayward and Cahn, 1982) or the Glencairn Museum in Philadelphia, a residence that he designed himself.
