In 1853 an exhibition was held in Dublin, financed by William Dargan, which sought to imitate the great exhibition held at the Crystal Palace in London. The success of the initiative led to the foundation of the National Gallery of Ireland in the same year. In 1864 the museum was officially inaugurated and in 1968 it was enlarged thanks to the donation of Alfred and Lady Clementine Beit. Among the works from Castilla y León housed in the institution is Saint Jerome, a panel attributed to Nicolás Francés.
