Aleksei Dmitrievich Saltykov (1806-1859) was born in St. Petersburg and was the son of Dmitri Nikolaevich Saltykov and Anna Nikolaevna Leontieva. After his eighteenth birthday he joined the diplomatic service of the Russian State College of Foreign Affairs (Moscow), holding various posts in Athens, London, Rome and Florence, among other cities. The contact he had with the Polish artist Aleksander Orlowski influenced his interest in the East, in fact, Saltykov visited India on several occasions. During these trips he devoted himself to collecting weapons and armor, forming a very large collection.
