Arthur Wellesley, 1st Duke of Wellington

London (United Kingdom)

Description

Arthur Wellesley (1769–1852), Duke of Wellington, was born in Dublin. He was raised in an aristocratic family and attended the prestigious Eton College (Berkshire, England) from 1781 to 1785. Shortly thereafter, he began his military career in the British Army, becoming a lieutenant colonel in 1793 (Elliott, 1816). In the early years of his career, he participated in military campaigns in the Netherlands during the wars against revolutionary France and later served in India, where he achieved significant victories that cemented his reputation. However, one of the most notable military actions he carried out was his involvement in the War of Independence. He led British and allied forces on the Iberian Peninsula against the French armies, achieving one of his greatest successes at the Battle of Vitoria (Serrats, 2018) on June 21, 1813, where he defeated the army of Joseph Bonaparte, Napoleon’s brother (Petrie, 1958).
