Description

Juan Lucas Cortés (1624–1701) held important positions in the service of the Spanish Monarchy during the 17th century. He was born in Seville and studied law at the University of Salamanca, where he received a solid education in the humanities. After a distinguished career in the judiciary, he was appointed a member of the Council of the Indies and, in 1687, of the Royal Council of Castile. At the same time, he assembled one of the country’s most important libraries, consisting of thousands of books and manuscripts (Andrés, 1976). After his death in Madrid, his library was dispersed.
