Description

Sir John Heathcoat Heathcoat-Amory (1829–1914) was a British Liberal politician and businessman. In his business capacity, he was a partner in the company J. Heathcoat & Co., which specialised in lace manufacturing, whilst in his political career he represented Tiverton in the House of Commons between 1868 and 1885. In 1867, he had a Victorian-style country house built, the design of which he commissioned from William Burges; this residence, known as Knightshayes Court, housed his art collection and is now managed by the National Trust.
