Marcello Massarenti (1817–1905) was almoner to Pope Pius IX. At his residence, the Palazzo Rusticucci-Accoramboni, he assembled a large art collection consisting of more than 1,700 pieces. In 1894, an inventory of his possessions was taken, and just a few years later, in 1902, the American magnate Henry Walters purchased his entire collection and moved it to Baltimore (United States).
