St Andrew’s Cathedral, Bordeaux

Burdeos (France)

Description

The origins of St. Andrew’s Cathedral (Bordeaux, France) date back to the late 11th century, when it was consecrated in 1096 by Urban II; however, very few remains from that period survive. It underwent modifications between the 12th and 16th centuries, although most of the work was completed during the 14th and early 15th centuries. Major ceremonies were held inside the cathedral, such as the wedding of Eleanor of Aquitaine to the future Louis VII of France in 1137. During the French Revolution, the cathedral lost its religious function and was used as a warehouse. Finally, in 1998, UNESCO designated the building a World Heritage Site.
