Joaquín Carvallo

Villandry (France)

Description

Joaquín Carvallo (1869–1924) was born in Badajoz (Spain), although his family was originally from Portugal. He moved to Madrid to study medicine and spent some time at the University of Heidelberg (Germany) and the Sorbonne in Paris (France). At the Marey Institute (Paris), he conducted pioneering research in the field of biology using the cinematograph. In the French capital, he met Ann Caroline Coleman (1875–1940), a young American woman whom he married in 1899. After the death of Coleman’s parents, she inherited a large fortune, which enabled them to settle in 1906 near Tours, at the Château de Villandry. In addition to restoring the estate, they displayed their art collection at the château, consisting mainly of Spanish, Italian, French, and Flemish works (Sicco, 2011).
