Biography

Post (1933) called this painter "Master of Burgos". However, after 1945 he was identified as Alonso de Sedano (¿?-1533). According to Silva Maroto (1990), Sedano had his apprenticeship in Burgos and was greatly influenced by artists such as Memling. Perhaps through the work of Diego de la Cruz and the Master of Salomón de Frómista. Likewise, his work is very influenced by the Master of the Balbases, something that can be observed in the rigid compositions and in the play of geometric forms that make the figures relate to each other (Silva, 1990). Mayer (1939) maintained that his paintings reminded him of some German ones, something that was also affirmed by Angulo (1930), who related him to Schongauer's engravings. Post (1933) indicated that his style evoked that of Piero della Francesca and Wethey (1936) emphasized the presence of Renaissance motifs in the architectures of his paintings. Although he developed most of his work in Burgos, he is documented in 1485 in Palma de Mallorca, where he painted the Martyrdom of Saint Sebastian. There are numerous works attributed to Alonso de Sedano that are present in museums and national and international institutions. See, for example: altarpiece of the relics (Museum of the Cathedral of Burgos); Altarpiece of the Life of the Virgin (Church of Montenegro de los Cameros, Soria); Mass of St. Gregory (March Collection, Mallorca) or the Miracle of the leg of St. Cosmas and St. Damian (Wellcome Collection, London).
