Mateo Cerezo was likely born in Burgos around 1637. His father, Mateo Cerezo, was a painter, and his maternal grandfather, Pedro Delgado, had worked as a gilder. Thus, Mateo Cerezo grew up in an artistic environment that fostered his professional career (Gutiérrez and Payo, 2020). In 1652, he moved to Madrid to train under Juan Carreño de Miranda. There, he had the opportunity to learn from other masters and to study the Italian paintings arriving at court (Rogelio, 1966). Numerous works by Mateo Cerezo are housed in national and international museums and institutions. Examples include The Mystic Marriage of Saint Catherine (Museo Nacional del Prado, Madrid); The Adoration of the Shepherds (Convent of Jesús y María, Valladolid); and Saint Thomas of Villanova Distributing Alms (Musée du Louvre, Paris).
