Biography

Cosimo Fanzago (1593-1678) was born in Clusone, Bergamo. He had grown up in a family of artists specializing in bronze and architecture, which motivated Fanzago to follow in their footsteps. He trained as a sculptor in Naples in the early 17th century with Angelo Landi. He later established his own workshop in that city. Although he is known for being one of the greatest exponents of the Baroque in Naples, he carried out works in other places such as Caserta, Rome, Calabria, Palermo and Spain. Cosimo Fanzago's works are numerous. Examples include: the spire of San Gennaro; the columns of the Piazza del Gesú Nuovo and the Piazza di San Domenico Maggiore, the Charterhouse of San Martín (Naples) or the sculptures of the High Altar of the convent of the Discalced Augustinian Nuns (Salamanca).
