Biography

Hardly any data are available about Joshua ben Abraham ibn Gaon, a scribe and illuminator active in Tudela and Soria in the early 14th century (Barco, 2014). Thanks to the final annotations of some manuscripts it is known that he participated in the production of four bibles: MS Il. 72 (Biblioteca Nacional de Portugal, Lisbon); MS Kennicott 2 (Bodleian Library, Oxford); MS 16 (Trinity College Library, Dublin) and MS Hébr. 20 (Bibliothèque nationale de France, Paris). In addition to these copies, others preserved in Parma, Oxford and Paris have been attributed to him, although it is difficult to confirm this hypothesis (Kogman-Appel, 2004).
