Encinas, Gil de

Active in Zamora since 1501

Biography

Gil de Encinas is associated with the School of the Master of Astorga. There is very little documentation regarding his life. A single document places him in Zamora in 1501, where he developed his work. Concerning the pieces he created, there are more questions than certainties. It is known, thanks to a contract, that he was responsible for completing the altarpiece of Horcajo in 1507 and also created some images for the Zamora Town Hall. His style is characterised by a softer, more velvety brushstroke compared to his schoolmates, which allowed him to render the textures of objects with greater detail (Fiz Fuertes, 2023).
