Juan de Burgos was a painter active in Castile in the 15th century. He is documented mainly in Valladolid between 1443 and 1464. Attempts have been made to relate him to other artists of the same name dedicated to glassmaking in León during the 1420s and 1450s, as well as to a miniaturist registered in Burgos in 1498, although without certainty (Gutiérrez, 2007). He was recognized as the king's painter and had the protection of Don Luis de Acuña, bishop of Burgos. In 1443 he painted an altarpiece of All Saints for the church of El Salvador in Valladolid, for which he received 5,000 maravedies (Rucquoi, 1987; Redondo, 2003). His style, visible in the only surviving signed work, shows a clear influence of Nicolás Francés, which reflects how, towards the middle of the 15th century, the Franco-Burgundian language coming from the Leonese focus was imposed on the Toledan trecentismo (Gutiérrez, 2007).
