Biography

There is little known about the Master of La Horta, whose name derives from the church of Santa María de la Horta in Zamora. Initially, it was believed that the altarpiece had been created by an Italian artist (Gómez-Moreno, 1927); however, Fiz Fuertes (2021) proposed its attribution to this other painter. Many works attributed to the Master of La Horta are dispersed across museums and institutions. For example, see the Virgin and Child with the Pietà and Saints (Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York) or Saint Clare and her Sister Agnes Sheltered in a Convent (Parmeggiani Gallery, Reggio Emilia).
