Biography

This artist is known as the Master of the Eleven Thousand Virgins because of his painting *Saint Ursula with the Eleven Thousand Virgins* (Prado Museum, Madrid). He was active in the province of Segovia between 1490 and 1500, where other works are also documented, such asThe Coronation of the Virgin, The Imposition of the Chasuble on Saint Ildefonsus, andThe Assumption of the Virgin (Prado Museum, Madrid). His style has been linked to the Master of the Parral (Rodríguez, 1962; Silva, 2004), who also worked in the province of Segovia and whose most characteristic work is Saint Jerome in His Scriptorium (Lázaro Galdiano Museum, Madrid). Among the defining characteristics of the Master of the Eleven Thousand Virgins is the expressive quality of his works, an element most evident in the eyes (Post, 1933; Ricart, 1955; Lafuente Ferrari, 1965; Camón Aznar, 1966).
