Maestro de Paredes

Active in Palencia in the early 16th century

Biography

Few studies have been undertaken on the Maestro de Paredes, a painter whose work is closely related to Pedro Berruguete (Silva, 1998). Angulo (1953) proposed his identification with Juan González Becerril, Berruguete's son-in-law. The production of the Maestro de Paredes is centered in Palencia, specifically in Paredes de Nava (Post, 1947). His style is related to artists such as Fernando Gallego, Pedro Berruguete or Maestro Alejo (Velasco Gonzàlez, 2019). Numerous works have been attributed to the Master of Paredes scattered in museums and institutions. See, by way of example, the following: the altarpiece of Santa Margarita in the church of Santa Eulalia (Paredes de Nava, Palencia); Nativity of the Virgin in the altarpiece of Calzada de los Molinos (Diocesan Museum, Palencia) or the Prayer in the Garden (Private Collection, France).
