Biography

Jaume Mateu trained as a painter in the workshop of his uncle, Pere Nicolau. He is known for being one of the greatest exponents of international Gothic in Valencia, whose presence is documented between 1402-1452. Although he produced many works for this city, he also carried out commissions for other cities such as Teruel, Barcelona and Palencia. Today his works are scattered in museums and institutions. Examples include: the altarpiece of San Jerónimo and the altarpiece of San Valerio (Segorbe Cathedral), the altarpiece of San Miguel Arcángel (Museo de Bellas Artes de Valencia), Arrival of Saint Ursula in England (Museo Nacional del Prado) or Saints Sebastian and Catherine of Alexandria (Philadelphia Museum of Art).
