Object history

This panel was part of an altarpiece dedicated to Saint Ursula and the eleven thousand virgins. Thanks to a photograph belonging to the Ruiz Vernacci Archive, Post (1933) and Pérez and Rodríguez (1995) were able to confirm that it was located inside the convent of San Pablo de Palencia in 1879. Shortly thereafter it must have been dismantled and dismembered. At present the altarpiece is scattered in different museums and collections:

Although the location of this panel was unknown, it was known thanks to a photograph that Post (1947) had published in one of his volumes, something that Pérez and Rodríguez (1995) emphasized in their work. Recently Fernando Pérez Suescun has located the panel in the Fogg Art Museum at Harvard University. The piece was acquired by the psychoanalyst Lillian Malcove in the mid-20th century. Malcove served on the board of directors of the Fogg Art Museum at Harvard University and in 1964 donated the panel to the museum.

(We are grateful for the information provided by Fernando Pérez Suescun).

Description

This piece belonged to the predella of the altarpiece. It depicts Saint Dominic, founder of the Dominican Order. He wears a black and white habit, characteristic dress of the Dominicans. In his left hand he holds a book, the Bible, alluding to the importance of the word and preaching, central mission of the order. With his other hand he holds a cane topped with a "T".

Locations
* The relative location of dealers, antique shops, art galleries, and collectors leads us to the places where they were based or had one of their main headquarters. However, this does not always indicate that every artwork that passed through their hands was physically located there. In the case of antique dealers and art merchants, their business often extended across multiple territories; sometimes they would purchase items at their origin and send them directly to clients. Similarly, some collectors owned multiple residences, sometimes in different countries, where they housed their collections. It is often difficult to determine exactly where a specific piece was kept during its time in their possession. Consequently, the main location of the dealer or collector is indicated. These factors should be considered when interpreting the map. Refer to the object's history in each case.
