The Statens Museum for Kunsthas its origins in the royal collections of the Danish monarchs. When Gerhard Morell took over as curator of the Chamber of Art in 1750 he suggested to Frederick V the creation of an independent painting collection. In the middle of the 19th century the collection became the property of the Danish people and was inaugurated in 1896. Among the works from Castilla y León housed in the institution are St. Michael by Lorenzo de Avila and St. Paul and St. James the Elder, attributed to the Master of St. Ildefonso.
