Hildburgh was born in New York in 1876. He was a scientist, skater, and art collector. His primary interest lay in collecting amulets and metal objects. He undertook numerous travels across Europe and Asia, which allowed him to acquire vast quantities of artefacts. He donated more than five thousand items to the Victoria & Albert Museum (London), as well as to the Ashmolean Museum (Oxford) and the Metropolitan Museum (New York).
