Louis-Charles de La Trémoille

Paris (France)

Description

Louis-Charles de La Trémoille (1839-1911), Duke of La Trémoille, was born in Paris into one of France's oldest noble families. From a young age, he was interested in historical and artistic studies, focusing his education on paleography and archiving. Far from limiting himself to an honorary role, the duke personally devoted himself to the study, classification, and preservation of the family archives, known as the chartrier de Thouars. Between 1875 and 1906, he published more than twenty volumes that are fundamental to our knowledge of medieval and modern French history. In recognition of his career, he was elected a member of the Académie des inscriptions et belles-lettres in 1899 (Fournier, 1915).
