Description

Arthur Löfkovits (1863–1935) was a Hungarian Jewish jeweler born in Nagyvárad, a city now known as Oradea, in present-day Romania. He later settled in Debrecen (Hungary), where he pursued his professional career. Over time, Löfkovits built up a large art collection and in 1902 he donated a significant part of it to the city of Debrecen with the aim of promoting the creation of a municipal museum, the Városi Múzeum. This transfer was made partly as a donation and partly in the form of a deposit. A few years later, Löfkovits acquired a building to house the collection and, on the occasion of its inauguration, deposited new pieces.
