Description

Vizcaya Museum & Gardens, (Villa Vizcaya) houses an interesting collection of European art from the 16th to the 19th centuries. Works include furniture, textiles, silver, ceramics, doors, fireplaces, etc. Pieces that were acquired on various trips around Europe by the collector James Deering (1859-1925), advised by the designer Paul Chalfin. The villa was designed facing Biscayne Bay by the architect Francis Burrall Hoffman (1882-1980) and had an Italianate feel to its design. Deering bought the 72 hectares of land for his villa, where Juan Ponce de León from Valladolid had landed on his second voyage of conquest in 1521. The museum and gardens are located at 3251 South Miami Avenue, Florida.
